NO.24 炫木

This issue features in the incorporation of wood into landscape design. As a crucial part of landscaping, wood not only creates spatial strata in cities but also sets off main feature. Wood fencing plays the role of separating and folding spaces, evoking sense of intimacy or strangeness or lukewarm blend. Terraces, steps, trellises, benches or even rain-proof shed could appear in the form of wood, offering a spatial structure irregular but interesting. Wood landscape shows a natural image of environmental protection, attracting many people’s attention. This issue includes various projects interpreting respectively the versatile functions of wood and its aesthetics.

NO.23 边缘设计

The researches about city space always focus much less on marginal space than on space context. Actually, the design and construction of marginal space are also very important in landscape design. If we regard the whole city as a beautiful “dress”, the marginal space is just the “lace” to prettify that “dress”; once without the decorative “lace”, the “dress” would be simple and boring… This issue will present several excellent projects with margin designs of different styles: Mendelssohnufer in Leipzig of Germany, Extending Landscape in Frederiksberg New Urban Spaces, UBS Sustainability Street, Textural Parquet of Interweaving Pathways outside the Hamburg Building Complex of the Kühnehöfe, and historical Darlington Pedestrian Heart…These fantastic projects will bring you into a colorful “Margin Design” world.

NO.22 下沉空间

Sunken space is chosen as topic since it appears in more and more blueprints of cities, not easy to ignore. Though it looks simply in form, just performing as an earth pit, sunken space plays an important role in environment. It needs to design thoroughly, to consider more problems before design, such as water supply and drainage, base, construction and so on. The projects of this topic will present you with sunken garden by the underground park, to sunken stone garden along the canal, to school at the verge of Alps.

NO.21 亚热带与热带

This issue could be regarded as a continuity of last “Post-modern Design of Japanese Style”, offering you with landscapes in tropical and sub-tropical areas. While Japanese style courtyards employing simple materials to create enchanting spaces, landscapes of these two latitudes utilize plants to maximum. Due to the climate and humidity, plants here are not needed any special maintenance, but easy for growth. However, you will also find more than just a variety of trees, vines… in the following projects after deep reading.

When it comes to Japanese Courtyard, it reminds us of a scene: a pool of water with stone slot over it. By the slot, mountain rocks are spattered with moss. Despite the small scale, the courtyard presents exquisite scenery by simple and natural design rather than complicated design and complex decoration. Moreover, it could be regarded as an epitome of typical Japanese landscape, which shows the designer’s respect to nature that never been given up from the time of imitating ChineseGardeneven to now. The courtyard is designed with natural, simple materials, such as water, stones, and later metal; however, it fully expresses the philosophy handed down from ancient time and Zen of the Nature. Nowadays, although abundant types of material have been discovered or created, the most common and simple elements still can teach you a lot, when you look at a Japanese courtyard that made appearance in this issue.

Children are willing to close to nature, with fresh air, sunshine, grass, fragrance and soil.

They like what makes them happy, which may be bright color, cute shape or a kind of feeling. No need of expensive material and elaborate landscape, but a safe and free space is necessary, just as cradle in nursery, playground in kindergarten, colorful and functional outdoor learning environment in elementary school. Wide and natural environment could help children to be conscious of changes of the surroundings, great art interlinks with their deep heart. Then, just think about it, what do our children need besides these?
